Safe Houses in Kenya

In August 2009, the VDay team visited one of the two Safe Houses created in Kenya. The Safe Houses offer a safe place to stay for girls that have escaped from Female Genital Cutting and Forced Marriage. More than just a shelter, the Safe Houses are communities where these girls can live and go to school.
The goal is to give a safe place to stay to girls while staff members mediate with the girls' families. In the best cases staff members succed in offering an alternative rite of passage and helping the reunification of girls with their families without the need for them to undergo female genital cutting.
